If you make a product that fizzes, ferments or reacts, you probably spend time worrying about container bulges, weeping caps and the big one… a burst in transit.
So what bottle can withstand pressure and gas release, and keep your product safe, from filling to fulfillment?
This is exactly where iBottles can help. For over three decades we’ve supplied high quality packaging to businesses of all shapes and sizes. In that time, we’ve learned a thing or two about matching products to bottles, and the best way to make sure the headspace and closures in particular are up to the job.
Here, we share our knowledge and explain how we can help you to protect your products across the supply chain and into your customer’s hands.
Two different pressure problems
When people approach our team about finding bottles that can withstand pressure, they are usually dealing with one of two problems.
Some products, like carbonated drinks, need packaging that holds the pressure in. Other products need packaging that lets gas out safely. This includes cleaning products and liquids that continue to react or off-gas after filling. For these products, sealing the container too tightly can create more risk, not less.
At iBottles, we supply packaging for both requirements. Our wide range includes PET bottles, HDPE bottles, jerrycans, vented caps and specialist closure options, so you can choose a setup that matches how your product needs to be stored, handled and delivered.
Bottles for products that need to hold pressure
For products that need to retain pressure, the bottle and closure must work together. It is not enough to choose a strong-looking bottle and hope for the best.
You need to think about the material, the shape of the bottle, the closure, the fill level and the conditions the product will face after filling. A product that looks stable in a cool room may behave differently in a warm warehouse, delivery van or customer’s cupboard.
PET is commonly used for fizzy drinks because it is lightweight, strong and suited to products that need to hold carbonation. The closure also matters. If the cap does not seal correctly, pressure can escape, the product can leak, or the customer can receive something that no longer performs as expected.
If your product needs to hold pressure, you should check the full pack before you order in volume: bottle, cap, fill level and storage conditions included.
Containers for products that need to release gas
Some products create the opposite challenge. They do not need packaging that traps pressure. They need packaging that manages gas release safely.
This is common with products that off-gas, react or continue changing after filling. Certain chemicals, cleaning products and fermenting liquids can build pressure inside a sealed container. If that pressure has nowhere to go, the container may swell, leak, crack or fail.
For these products, a stronger sealed bottle is not automatically the safer choice. The safer choice is usually a suitable container with the right vented closure.
Vented caps are designed to let gas escape in a controlled way. This reduces pressure build-up inside the container while keeping the product contained. This makes them a practical option for many products that cannot be stored safely in a fully sealed pack.
HDPE jerrycans and vented caps
For products that need sturdy and stackable storage, alongside controlled gas release, HDPE jerrycans are a strong starting point.
HDPE is tough, practical and widely used for chemical and industrial liquids. It offers good impact resistance and is available in heavy-duty formats for products that need more robust packaging than a standard bottle.
At iBottles, our HDPE jerrycans are available in a range of sizes, including 5L, 10L, 20L and 25L options, with compatible closure choices. Depending on your product, you may need a standard tamper-evident, child-resistant or vented cap.
For products that release gas, the vented cap is often the key part of the pack. It allows the container to breathe, and reduces bulging, distortion and pressure-related failure.
We also supply options including UN-approved, fluorinated and food-grade packaging, depending on the product and intended use.
Test before you order in volume
The safest way to choose packaging for pressure or gas release is to test it with your own product to make sure it works in line with UK guidance.
A container can look suitable on paper, but the real test is how it performs once filled, capped, stored and handled. Your formula, fill level, closure and storage conditions all matter.
This is why iBottles offers no minimum order quantity. You can order a single container, test it with your product, check the cap fit and see how the packaging behaves before committing to a larger order.
That is especially important for products that fizz, ferment, react or off-gas. Testing helps you spot problems early, before they become expensive stock, fulfilment or customer issues.
Find the right packaging with iBottles
