If you make or sell small-dose liquids, the dropper bottle is one of the hardest-working bits of packaging on your shelf. It’s a popular format for everything from essential oils and skincare serums to tinctures, vape liquids and craft dyes.

In this guide, the packaging specialists at iBottles cover the considerations you should make when selecting the ideal dropper bottles for your products.

The component parts of a dropper bottle

Different types of dropper bottles are made from a combination of several components, and the exact specification you choose should follow your product's viscosity, ingredients, dosage and the person using it.

Bottle

The bottle is the body that holds and stores your liquid. It comes in a range of sizes, materials and colours, and carries your branding. Size affects how much headspace you leave when filling; material and colour affect how well the bottle protects light-sensitive contents. We stock dropper bottles from 3ml upwards, so you can match the capacity to a single retail dose or a larger refill.

Pipette

The pipette is the glass or plastic tube that draws liquid up and dispenses it. Plain pipettes are fine for most products, while graduated pipettes carry measurement markings if your users need to see how much they're drawing. Thicker, more viscous products need a wider orifice so the liquid moves smoothly. Thin, free-flowing liquids suit a fine needle or stubby tip.

Rubber bulb

The rubber bulb sits on top of the pipette and creates the suction that draws liquid up. Strong essential oils and some chemicals can affect certain rubbers over time, so it’s worth looking into compatibility with your product. If you aren’t sure, call us - we can discuss the manufacturer's guidance with you and where packaging may not be suitable, suggest alternatives from our wide range.

Closure

The cap or closure seals the bottle and keeps it secure in transit and on the shelf. Closures range from a plain screw cap to tamper-evident and child-resistant options.

Tamper-evident closures are important when products are being sold through retail, e-commerce or any setting where the customer needs to know the bottle has not been opened or interfered with before use. Child-resistant closures are vital where the contents could be harmful if swallowed, inhaled or handled by a child, including some essential oils, vape liquids, chemicals and concentrated formulas. For example, UK vape regulations require nicotine-containing products or their packaging to be child-resistant and tamper-evident, while the GB Classification, Labelling and Packaging Regulation requires child-resistant fastenings for products with certain hazard classifications or substance concentrations.

What are dropper bottles used for?

Dropper bottles are used anywhere a maker or brand needs to dispense small amounts of liquid with precision. The drop-by-drop dispensing method gives controlled drops, reduces waste and keeps an expensive or potent product going further. Here are the use cases we see most across our customers.

  • Essential oils and aromatherapy blends. Aromatherapy oils are often potent, so a dropper lets users dispense a measured number of drops.

  • Skincare serums and facial oils. Skincare serums, vitamin C blends and facial oils all benefit from precise application to clean skin. A dropper keeps fingers out of the bottle and limits waste.

  • Tinctures and herbal extracts. Herbal tinctures and botanical extracts are dispensed drop by drop, so the dropper is the natural fit.

  • Beard and hair oils. A few drops worked through the hands is all most beard oils and scalp treatments need, making the dropper ideal.

  • Vape liquids and short fill bottles. Vape liquids use dropper or drop-shot tips for clean, mess-free decanting and topping up.

  • Cleaning liquids, dyes and craft liquids. Concentrated cleaning products, fabric dyes, food colourings and craft liquids all suit controlled dispensing where a splash would be too much.

  • Laboratory and sample use. For laboratory applications and reagent sampling, dropper bottles dispense liquids in small, repeatable amounts.

Where you are producing small volumes and require controlled dispensing, dropper bottles are ideal.

Choosing the right dropper bottle: material, colour and size

Picking the right dropper bottle comes down to three decisions: material, colour and size.

Material

There are two primary materials to choose from. PET and recycled rPET are lightweight and shatter-resistant, ideal for retail and postal lines. We also stock dropper bottles in 100% recycled rPET, so you can offer a recycled-content bottle without losing strength. For many brands, PET is the practical pick on cost, weight and postal safety.

LDPE squeezy plastic dropper bottles offer soft, squeezable packaging, often paired with a stubby tip for a drop-shot style dispense. It's a favourite for vape liquids and any product where a gentle squeeze is needed to push the liquid out.

Colour

Colour choice is mostly about light. Some active ingredients, especially essential oils and vitamin C serums, are light-sensitive: UV exposure can break them down over time. Amber glass and opaque or coated bottles protect these contents from UV rays; clear glass offers little UV protection, so store clear-glass products in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.

Size

We offer dropper bottles across a spread of sizes and cap diameters (14mm to 46mm), with thin needle, stubby, flip-out and wide-neck drop-shot options. Match the size to your dose and the tip to your liquid's viscosity. Not sure which combination suits your product? Ask us, or request samples before you buy.
